Chipotle Is Testing Quinoa As New Menu Addition

Vegan Options at Chipotle

According to Chipotle Spokesperson Chris Arnold, the Chipotle test kitchen in New York City is working on a new menu item, quinoa “red and gold quinoa tossed with a little citrus juice, cumin, and freshly chopped cilantro,” which they plan to recommend as a substitute for rice, and as an add-on for salads. “This may be the first big change to Chipotle’s menu under the direction of new chief executive officer Brian Niccol.” –Eater.com.

The possible addition of quinoa must be because of the popularity of the vegan sofritas that have been on the menu for a few years now. If you haven’t tried sofritas yet, it is made from shredded organic tofu that’s been braised with chipotle peppers, roasted poblanos, and spices.

Now you may be asking yourself, why should vegans care about this possible new menu item? Well, the thing is that not all restaurants that provide quinoa on the menu, make said quinoa vegan. For example, the quinoa on the vegan-friendly restaurant Pei Wei isn’t vegan (it contains milk and shellfish) and most people think it is. This is why you should always check all the ingredients when eating out.

Chipotle makes it very easy to know what you can and cannot order to make sure that your meal is completely vegan. You go to their site and click on the NUTRITION tab, then choose the DIETARY OPTIONS tab, then choose VEGAN from the list of dietary options.
