TooJay’s is a Gourmet Deli in the state of Florida, and now that we’re getting a new one in Pembroke Pines, FL (Opening at the End of March 2018, according to their corporate office) I looked up what we as vegans can eat there. I wasn’t expecting to find over 20 items, not counting sides! So bravo to TooJay’s for having more than just salads for those of us who choose to eat without any animal products. All these recommendations are based on the Allergens Menu from November 2017 (the link is at the bottom of this post). Always ask at the restaurant if everything you are ordering is indeed STILL VEGAN.
If I have missed something or you have a #veganhack for TooJay’s, please share them in the comments.
Starters & Small Plates
Roasted Brussels Sprouts Medley (say No Bacon and ask that the veggies be cooked in olive oil instead of butter)
Tomato Cucumber Salad
Vegetarian Vegetable (not available every day)
Hand Tossed Salads
Roasted Vegetable Salad
Strawberry Citrus Salad (say No Cheese)
Mediterranean Health Trio (A delightful combination of tabouleh, hummus and fresh fruit. Served with pita bread.)
Light Olive Oil Vinaigrette
Oil and Vinegar
Mediterranean Vegetable on sundried tomato tortilla or wheat tortilla (say No Cheese)
Roasted Vegetable on sundried tomato tortilla or wheat tortilla (say No Cheese)
Vegetable Quesadilla (this requires a few hacks, my favorite is to ask for hummus instead of the cheese, this way the “quesadilla” holds together and then I ask for avocado instead of the sour cream there might be an upcharge for this substitution.)
Portobello Mushroom Stack (say No Cheese and request it on a tortilla instead of the brioche bun, keep scrolling and you’ll also see a list of their vegan bread)
We went with the black bean burger and broccoli. I always ask for no butter on veggies. Look for the meal with the most veggies and take out the chicken or meat that maybe included. I always let my server know I have a dairy allergy Some tips on how I eat plant based at non vegan restaurants. I always order Cristian food from the adult menu (if I didn’t bring his own food) as most kids menu never have a healthy or vegan option. So he had a black bean burger with broccoli as well.
Build Your Own Burger
Black Bean Burger
Grilled Green Peppers
Roasted Veggie Pasta (say no to creamy lemon garlic sauce, instead request olive oil only, and say No toasted garlic bread, see below for the vegan bread options)
Roasted Brussels Sprouts
Roasted Red Potatoes
Side of Sweet Potato Fries
*All the veggies are prepared with Garlic Butter
*Rice is prepared with Butter
Oatmeal (you can add brown sugar, fresh strawberries, and raisins, 2 toppings are included)
Grits (without the butter cups)
*All Bagels have Egg and Milk according to their Allergen Menu
Everything looks so yummy, let me know in the comments if you have had any of these dishes and maybe how you have ordered at TooJay’s to make your meals vegan.
Now, if you don’t feel like going out to eat, stay home and make yourself a delicious Mock Tuna Sandwich, here’s the recipe.
